Firstly I would like to wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year and to thank all my wonderful clients for their support in 2010. I have a feeling that 2011 will see a turnaround in our slightly besieged economy. I could already feel a difference in the second half of last year.
My work has suddenly started taking me more into our neighbouring states, meeting such interesting people with the same media problems that occur in South Africa. Before I migrated for my annual respite under the mountains in Cape Town I worked with people from Nigeria, Botswana, Malawi, Swaziland, Angola, Zimbabwe and beyond - and look forward to spending more time in Africa this coming year.
As well as media training, 2011 holds some exciting challenges for me. I’m kicking off the year with a Public Relations Master Class for PRISA (Public Relations Institute of South Africa) on the 26th January. This follows my appearance as a guest speaker at their 2010 Conference and I’m flattered to be asked to take this further.
March will see my involvement in a two-day workshop for some 30 South African journalists on mental health journalism, being bought to our shores by the Carter Center, Atlanta and being held here under the auspices of SADAG (South African Depression and Anxiety Group). This of course stems from my work on the South African Board of the Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism. The wonderful Rebecca Palpant, the deputy director of this programme in the USA will be returning to South Africa together with two prominent guests (names to be announced shortly) who will share their wealth of knowledge and expertise with this group of selected media.
This year will also see my writing and media work for the Baby Expo being extended into their exciting new Expo ‘Future Ed’. This will be the biggest educational expo for teachers, parents and anyone connected with education ever to take place in South Africa and I’m really looking forward to working with the team from Exposure Marketing on this great project.
On the writing side my work with Bakone Strategic Projects on their various medical projects continues.
Still in writing and perhaps my current favourite is my Sunday Times Lifestyle column ‘What I’ve Learnt’. So far I’ve interviewed (see write ups on website) the inimitable Professor Phillip Tobias, the legendary cameraman Alf Khumalo, cricket legend Ali Bacher, music icon Claire Johnston and legal hero, George Bizos. Watch this space to see who else will be on my list! At the end of this series there will be a book. With far more than is in the articles…
My work training within the media, with 702 Talk Radio and CNBC Africa will also continue and I look forward to seeing the fruits of my work there.
Last, but absolutely not least, are my new courses which I’m really excited about. Each year I review and update these based on my work with companies and writers over the previous year, taking into account new trends and needs. I’m kicking these off with a press release writing course on February 8th, followed by a series of courses on ‘Freelancing for a living’. For more information on any of these or anything else you need to know please don’t hesitate to contact me directly – 082 467 6046 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. So once again let us hope for a peaceful, fulfilled 2011 and I look forward to meeting those of you I know again and those of you I don’t yet know!
